The Severn Trow
The twin masted sailing vessel was the workhorse of the Severn for many years, carrying up to 100 tons. The masts could be lowered to get under bridges.
The vessels would be towed when sailing was impossible. The tow rope, pulled by a team of men, was attached to the top mast because of the low lying river.
The sign above is at Brinscombe, Gloucestershire and shows a trow in full sail.
The Trow “Spry”, right, is preserved at Blists Hill Museum at Ironbridge, Shropshire.
