Built on the Croome estate, RAF Defford played a crucial role in World War II: with the move of the Radar Research Establishment from the south coast to Malvern a base for flight testing was needed, and recently built RAF Defford was ideally placed. The former hospital huts, about half a mile from the runways, now form the National Trust reception area for Croome Court and Park.
