Castles

UPTON – It was reputed there was a fortification on what is now Hanley Road Car park, perhaps dating from Roman times, but more probably the earthworks to the left of the picture are the remains of a lime kiln. Note the bridge is the earlier one, downstream of the current bridge.

HANLEY – There was once a Norman castle built as a hunting lodge for King John in 1207 near the present day village. By the end of the 15th century it had been mostly demolished, and the tower was finally removed in 1795. A few traces still remain including a dry moat and a mound.
